The Dred Scott Decision 1857 Dread Scott was a slave who was suing for his freedom. He was told he was property, had no rights, and that he wasn't even a citizen. Slavery advocates were encouraged and began to make plans to expand slavery into all of the western territories and states. This created much of the tension that caused the Civil War.
Lincoln Douglas Debates 1858 A series of 7 debates between Lincoln and Stephen Douglas that revolved around the subject of slavery. The debates were very important to who would win the presidential race, which Lincoln did in 1860.
Harper's Ferry 1859 Harper's Ferry is the site of John Brown's raid. The radical abolitionist raided the federal armory there in 1859, planning to start a slave rebellion in the South. His plan failed as federal troops under Colonel Robert E. Lee stopped him violently, capturing him and putting him on trial. He was found guilty of treason and sentenced to hang.

Antietam 1862 The Battle of Antietam was the first major battle to take place on Union grounds. It was the bloodiest one day battle In all of American history. Almost 23,000 were killed, went missing, or were wounded just in one day.
Emancipation Proclimation 1863 The order written by Lincoln as a war measure during the war that all of the Executive branch are proclaimed of freedom of slaves in those 10 states that were still in rebellion.
Gattysburg and Gettysburg Address 1863 A speech given by Lincoln suring the Civil War in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It took place 4 and a half months after the Union states won the Battle of Gettysburg.
Andersonville Prison 1864 A prison that held more prisoners at any time other than Confederate military prisons. It lasted for 14 months and more than 14,000 Union members were held there. Most of the people died from poor sanitation, malnutrition, lack of space, disease, etc.
Surrender at Appomattox Court House 1865 The final engagement of Confederate states army General Robert E. Lee's armt of northern Virginia before it surrendered to the Union under U. Grant. Lee launched an attack to break through the Union force to his front.
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln 1865 The killing of President Lincoln took place on Good Friday, April 14, 1865. The civil war was coming to an end. He was the first president to be assassinated. John Wilkes Booth was a stage actor who is responsible for murdering him.
